In this discussion held during the Winter School 2025, Prof. Michael Hofer (Switzerland) and Prof. Dirk Foell (Germany) reflect on how paediatric rheumatology has evolved over the past 25 years—from establishing its own identity to becoming a fully recognised specialty. With this maturity comes a new phase: genuine collaboration with adult rheumatology.
They explore shared challenges and opportunities, from transition to adult care to joint initiatives such as the new Still’s disease classification, online education, and pan-European research networks. Both emphasize the importance of continuity for patients whose diseases begin in childhood but continue into adulthood, and how both fields benefit from learning from each other.
A forward-looking discussion on how unified efforts lead to better care for patients across all ages.
This interview is based upon work from COST Action CA21168. COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.
