Cross-national access to IL-1 inhibitors in FMF
Can patients with colchicine-resistant FMF access IL-1 inhibitors equally, regardless of where they live?
A new study from the JIR-CliPS project compared national guidelines, availability and reimbursement policies for IL-1 inhibitors in FMF across 39 countries.
The findings reveal substantial differences between countries. Anakinra was available in 29 countries and reimbursed in 23, while canakinumab was available in 23 countries and reimbursed in 21. Yet 18 countries had additional prescription or reimbursement restrictions.
The study also highlights important differences in how colchicine resistance is defined and how IL-1 inhibitors are prescribed, underlining the challenges of applying international recommendations consistently in clinical practice.
These findings raise an important question: can we ensure equitable access to effective treatment for patients with FMF, wherever they live?
